July is “Disability Pride Month”! This month is a celebration, acknowledgement, and acceptance of those with visible and invisible disabilities and disorders! This year is the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which passed on July 26, 1990, prohibiting the discrimination of individuals with disabilities and providing rightful accessibility and accommodations for everyone. This federal civil rights law makes visiting places – like our library – a safe and welcoming environment, free of barriers that those with disabilities may face otherwise. We are also a KultureCity location- if you are experiencing sensory issues, we have designated silent areas and bags with tools to help individuals communicate during nonverbal periods and self regulate while in the library. We also have a diverse and extensive collection of Disability Resources available to check out! For this article, I’ve picked out some of the best children’s picture books, chapter books, nonfiction books, and movies, featuring characters with disabilities and stories, available at WPPL to celebrate this month!
We hope you check out these books and movies!

Disclaimer: Some of the older books and movies may include outdated diagnosis names, treatments and depictions of disabilities and aids.
