The Westlake Porter Public Library Makerspace is a creative recording, design and fabrication space that allows library patrons the opportunity to access a variety of professional and innovative tools and software. It has been open for about a year now, and wow have we been busy! over 100 appointments a month! That’s a lot of Makers making or learning to make all sorts of creative and useful items including 3D printers, a sewing machine, a CNC engraver, a sound booth and more! The Maker revolution has hit Westlake Porter Public Library!

Let’s take a moment to listen to what some of the instructors in our Makerspace have to say about the past year!

The Maker Space staff consists of:

What do you like about working in the Maker Space?

“Every day brings a chance to learn something new. Each appointment is a possibility to make a new connection and create something unique. It’s an exciting place to be!” –Katie Cooley

“The enthusiasm of patrons making things!” –Jenny Norton

“I love getting the chance to work with all of the fantastic equipment we have and try out hobbies and crafts I would never have otherwise. It’s also very gratifying to be able to teach these new skills to patrons and see the awesome creative projects they come up with.”– Adrien Krajnik

“My favorite part of working in the Makerspace is meeting all the talented artists and creatives of our patron base!”–Taylor Jacobs

“I love working in the Makerspace because I’m constantly surrounded by a creative community. Whether it be from patrons or my coworkers, I can always count on learning something new that I can attribute to my own art practice.”–Jamie Novak

What is your favorite piece of equipment in the Maker Space?

“I love seeing the creations made using sublimation. It’s a really fun way to get to know our patrons and their families.–Katie Cooley

“The embroidery machine.”–Jenny Norton

“That’s a hard one because I love them all so much… but if I had to pick it is probably the 3D printers.”–Adrien Krajnik

“Our 3D printers are always going and you just never know what people will come up with. I would have to say the 3D printers for that reason.”–Taylor Jacobs

“I really love the 3D printers. It’s exciting to watch something build up layer by layer, and the possibilities are endless!”–Jamie Novak

Describe something you created, or helped someone create that you are really proud of!

“One of our patrons turned her mother’s sari into pillow cases specially made for her grand-children. This was such a touching and heart-warming project to be a part of.” –Katie Cooley

“There is a dance studio on Center Ridge that has cut all of their signage with our large form vinyl cutter. I’m very proud to have taught that business owner how to do the entire process and to watch her go on to make eye catching signs for her business that I get to see every time I drive home.”–Adrien Krajnik

“It’s really rewarding when I help someone who, prior to their project, don’t think they have it in them to complete something so creative… and then they create a total success and are proud of themselves! :)”–Taylor Jacobs

“I recently helped a patron create a birthday present for their son, using our heat press to sublimate baby pictures onto a t-shirt. It’s always special to help people with sentimental projects & share stories while creating.”–Jamie Novak
