The library’s outreach specialist, Sarah Beebe, doesn’t just deliver library materials to Westlake senior facilities and homebound patrons — she also delivers much needed social interaction, education and entertainment.
Each month, Beebe delivers to 16 Independent living, assisted living and Skilled Nursing facilities within the city of Westlake. Some of these facilities are continuum-of-care campuses, where Beebe delivers to residents in all levels of care, including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and short-term rehabilitation, and memory care units.
Deliveries vary from providing a selection of materials for residents to browse to choosing items based on individual preferences and delivering hold requests. In some cases, particularly the nursing homes, Beebe delivers materials directly to the rooms of patients who are bedridden or unable to visit a common area.
In addition to deliveries, Beebe also offers programs at most of the facilities. She does an estimated 18 to 19 programs each month and also presents at the Westlake Community Center and the Farrell Foundation. Topics typically include popular culture, history, music, and other subjects, accompanied by digital presentations.
“The residents really enjoy the programs, especially music,” said Beebe. “They have a good time, and it’s fun.” She also noted that the facilities appreciate both the deliveries and programs.
The library also offers delivery service to Westlake residents whose permanent or temporary condition prohibits a safe visit to the library. Beebe selects materials and delivers to registered homebound patrons.
But Outreach visits aren’t just about delivering library materials—they’re also about human connection. According to Beebe, many homebound patrons enjoy the opportunity to visit with her. For those who are unable to leave their homes regularly, that personal interaction is just as important as receiving books, movies, and other library materials.
