Have you ever painted a rock before?
I gave it a try for the first time this year, and surprised myself by how much fun I had! My little rock friend was not nearly so impressive as the beautiful mandalas in the image to the left; Mine instead looks like a cute little ladybug!
Fun fact: some home gardeners will actually put rocks painted to look like strawberries in their berry beds about 3 weeks before the berries turn red. This is meant to deter birds from swooping down & scooping up the growing berries. The idea is that the birds will see the bright rocks and try to peck at them. Once they discover that the rocks are not food, they’ll leave the plants alone! Learn more about making your own strawberry decoys here.
Even if you’re not painting clever bird-deterring decoys, painting rocks is a fun summertime activity for all ages! My little ladybug lives on my desk, keeping me company while I type this blog. This simple craft can be done a million different ways – your only limit is your imagination!
