Like many things this year, Westlake Porter Public Library’s annual STEAM Week will be virtual, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience some of the fun at home! Check out our take-home STEAM kits in the library catalog. Here are just a few of the things you can do:
Google Cardboard is a virtual reality viewer made of—you guessed it—cardboard. Just install the Google Cardboard app on your Android or iOS smartphone, slip it in the headset, and experience 3D videos on YouTube, play games, or search your device’s app store for many other VR experiences in 360°!
Makey Makey turns any conductive material, such as Play-Doh, water, or even bananas into a keyboard (which you can see in this video). Check out some of the books and eBooks we have on using a Makey Makey, as well as some online resources. You can learn even more about electric circuits with Power Tiles or Inventions!
Build things like paddleboats, an earthquake-proof building, or even a Robo Hand with a STEM Challenge Kit.
If you like learning about nature, check out one of the Hands-On Science Specimen center kits, such as this one on mammals, or the Real Bugs Discovery Kit. Take an even closer look at specimens with a microscope or a Can-Do Science Kit on magnification!
Again, you can see all of the STEAM kits we have in the library catalog, or just come in and browse the shelves to see what’s here (we’re open for browsing—just wear a mask). All returned materials are quarantined for 72 hours before being placed back on the shelves.
Happy STEAM Week!
