Author Spotlight: Kate Beaton

When I’m looking for a good laugh from an author who shares my off-beat sense of humor, I always reach for Kate Beaton. Kate is hilarious and her webcomic, Hark! a Vagrant never fails to make me smile. If you’re looking for something weird and silly yet also (sometimes) smart, you’ve come to the right place.

The Hark! A Vagrant webcomic is all about history and literature. And if you don’t want to read it online, you can check it out in Step Aside, Pops: A Hark! A Vagrant Collection. These are the sorts of jokes that definitely make more sense if you remember learning about various historical and literary figures during your time in school. But, even if you don’t get the joke, you’re still going to find something to laugh about. With her distinctive art style and quirky characters, Beaton is a real treat to read, and nothing quite highlights her skills like her comics.

All hail King Baby! If we’re being honest, we tend to treat babies like royalty. We cater to their every whim, feed them, bathe them, and treat them like the most important person in the room. Is it any wonder that a baby would start to feel like a king? This silly, yet somehow relatable look at a new baby and his place in the family is too cute for words.

The Princess and the Pony is a cute take on the typical princess narrative. Princess Pinecone wants a horse. But, not just any horse will do. It has to be BIG and STRONG! The perfect companion for a WARRIOR PRINCESS! But…when she gets the promised pet for her birthday, the dopey, farting pony is not quite the majestic beast she was hoping for…
