Dear students:

“In person” school has officially been cancelled for the rest of the year. Whether you’re excited about this or deeply saddened, I think we can all agree that none of us started the school year thinking that it would end like this. The strangeness of the situation got me thinking, so I put together a list of some manga with crazy school scenarios. Aren’t you glad your classes aren’t like this??

Assassination Classroom

World’s Worst (or best??) Teacher

One day, an immensely powerful octopus-like creature appears, destroys 70% of the moon, and then threatens to destroy the Earth in one year’s time…unless a very specific condition can be met. He wants the opportunity to teach a junior high class of misfits, both in the traditional subjects and in the art of assassination. If his students can’t kill him before the year is out, the world is doomed. The problem is that “Koro-Sensei” is not only unstoppable, but he’s also the best teacher that the students have ever had!

My Neighbor Seki

Most Distracting Desk-Mate

Poor Rumi! She just wants to pay attention in class and get a good grade at the end of the semester. But, focus is nearly impossible when she’s stuck sitting next to Seki. Not only does he not pay attention, but he’s incredibly distracting! He plays games, does magic tricks, and even cooks at his desk! Rumi really is trying to pay attention, but keeps getting in trouble. But, it’s not her fault–it’s Seki’s.

Kamisama Kiss

Most Desirable…In All the Wrong Ways!

Nanami is abandoned by her gambler father and evicted from their apartment. Homeless and desperate, she accepts a strange deal from an even stranger man–she can come and live in his house, because he doesn’t need it anymore. Oh, and tell Tomoe he’s sorry. What? But, when Nanami arrives at the house, it’s actually a shrine! And Tomoe is a handsome fox spirit who is now Nanami’s servant, because in accepting the “house”, she became the shrine’s new god! Now, Nanami has to balance her new life AND all the regular difficulties of high school. But, when monsters from the spirit world learn that a delicious young girl has acquired the powers of a god, everyone wants a piece of her. High school was hard enough! And now this??

Non Non Biyori

Smallest School

The Asahigaoka Branch School is so small, it only has five students! But, that doesn’t bother them. Renge, Komari, Natsumi, and Hotaru don’t seem to mind the cramped conditions or the rural neighborhood. Rather, the four friends (sometimes joined by siblings and neighbors) always find something to amuse themselves. If you’re looking for a chill slice-of-life series to while away the time, then this is the one for you!

Nichijou

Most Unprepared

So, this is one of my all-time favorite series! Nichijou follows a group of high school girls through their day-to-day lives. But, the story combines both the normal and the off-the-wall craziness. The principal fights a deer, one of the Vice Principal is plotting his downfall, one of the students is a robot who hopes that no one will notice the giant key in her back… The action is fast-paced and the humor is bizarre in this incredible series!
